Posting this article for World Environment Day !!
Just few days back …. we (my brother n cousin) were talking about water : that it won’t be long when countries will fight for fresh water ie. drinkable water … like now they’re fighting for oil in Gulf countries.
Water is the second name for Life – without it nothing can survive. It’s sad how people in our country misuses water. Household work alone consumes gallons of water … so there’s no question of let it run down the drain pipe unneccessarily – example : By washing the front/back yard of the house using pipe water or washing dishes under running tape or using RO to clean drinking water and letting the unclean water go down the drain. Some people let their overhead tank to overflow as they are lazy to climb stairs.
These are few example … which might seem little wasteage – but if consider the whole city is doing that much wasteage and there’re so my cities in India … imagine at that point – how much water is being wasted only in daily household work.
If asked – do only city people waste water ? …. well it seems so – as there is a water shortage in city only. In many parts of India … people has to carry water from a very far distance – they definately won’t waste as getting water for them is very hard.
There surely will be a day when everyone will understand the value of water … Unfortunately – the hard way when water crisis will be at it’s peak !!
Awarness is the most essential thing right now. It is very important to create awarness … it’s not that educated people have more knowledge so they automatically will have the sense of awarness …. they simply might be ignorant. So the next time u see anyone misusing water – don’t hesitate to tell them it’s a crime they are doing. No matter if it’s our neighbours .. friends .. family – just tell them the consequence … NO WATER .. NO LIFE !!
There’re many ways of saving and reusing this valuable resource … which i consider as recylcling of water !
Take as much water as u can drink in a glass … still if u can’t finish the whole glass of water .. keep it for the next time – don’t pour it down the sink ! Water the garden before sunrise n after sunset … it will not only benefit the plants but also save water as less will evaporate.
Use bucket of water and broom to wash the front/back yard of the house.
When one washes clothes in a bucket (saves water as compare to washing machine) … more or less 3 to 4 bucket of water is use. After taking the clothes out of the 2nd n 3rd bucket – that water can be use to mop the floor and the 4th bucket can be use to water the garden.
Same with washing the dishes …. don’t wash them under running tape – use bucket of water instead. Use bucket of water instead of the shower for bathing … it too will save water.
Using of RO for clean drinking water but don’t throw the unclean water …. store it in a bucket n use it to wash clothes/mop the floor/water the plants.
Harvasting rain water is a great idea … but one might think i a place like Delhi where it may rain for two months a year or even less … setting up a rain harvasting plant is not worth it. It’s not true … because every drop of rain water use – lower the use of ground water … n so ground water is saved.
These might save little water but by taking small steps … people can make huge difference !!
Other way of recycling day to day product :
Selling newspaper isn’t new but polybags can be sold too … there’re people who collect polybags from door to door.
Give away old clothes to poor people … if more clothes are left – give them to “bartinwali” in exchange of utensils …. if still more clothes are left – give them to the rug vendors in exchange of rug made of clothes …(quite useful in winter).
In a household … everyday lots of vegetable waste (including vegetable n fruit peels n used tea leaves) are thrown in the dustbin and later to the garbage heap. There is a way to get rid of the vegetable waste by converting it to a useful fertilizer.
Everyday … dump all the vegetable waste in a bucket (it has to be a large one). In a gap of 2 to 4 days – sprinkle some water over the waste product and always cover it with a lid. When it get filled – keep it aside an let it rot for some time. Few months later it will turn into fertilizer … if u don’t have garden – sell it to someone who has one.
If this is discovery of converting waste to useful material in a eco-friendly way … then it’s a DISCOVERY !
Sending this post for “Conserve – Recycle – Discover” … Blog Adda contest – which is sponsored by the …. Pringoo :0
It is a common sight in cities to find overhead tanks overflowing from houses for the simple reason that people living inside have either forgotten to switch off the motor or busy gossiping!
Lovely ideas on saving water…I feel that a washing machine uses less water than when we wash with our hands…plus you can wash more clothes and they come out cleaner too..
Apart from that all ideas are excellent and I do try to practice most of them…
Thank you for commenting on my blog 🙂
Thanks S.R. Ayyangar …. that’s so true !
